“Took me some time to realize I was wasting my time with Bailey’s books. My past and present Theosophical experience and knowledge, allowed me finally to see the light, so to speak. Your article about it was the last proof.” – comment from a reader of the article Tibetan Master or Christian Priest? (Uncovering the real inspiration behind the Alice Bailey Books)
Often when some Theosophists are critical of the Alice Bailey teachings, others accuse them of negativity or dogmatism and argue that “there is nothing concerning or disturbing in the Bailey books,” “the Bailey books are full of only love and compassion,” “the Bailey books are not Christian propaganda,” etc. Sometimes they say “You should read and study the Bailey books before criticising them.”
We would like to clarify that both this article and Tibetan Master or Christian Priest? were in fact written by someone who had initially been a very serious and devoted student of the Bailey teachings (even down to promoting those teachings online and involvement in “triangles” and the full moon meditations, etc.) but who then began to read H. P. Blavatsky and research into the history of the Theosophical Movement and whose conscience could then no longer allow themselves to continue with Bailey nor to keep silent about her deceptive and anti-theosophical ideas.
It is very easy to just dismiss criticism of Bailey with “This is rubbish” or “You don’t know what you’re talking about” or “Totally untrue,” as often happens online, without backing up such assertions with referenced evidence. The article Tibetan Master or Christian Priest? is full of referenced evidence, including many exact quotations from Bailey herself, to support the points made in the article.
Some say “It’s so closed-minded to not accept that the Masters can give out further teachings at different times.”
They seem unaware that HPB herself, along with her Adept-Teachers and her closest colleague William Q. Judge, made very clear that in actuality the Masters can only do this – for the Western world, at least – in the closing 25 years of a century. And if the Bailey supporters then say, despite the great occult seriousness of the matter, that “HPB made a mistake about that,” they must surely be able to see why dedicated HPB students view them as having next to no respect for HPB and her work and writings, regardless of what they may claim at other times.
Aside from that, why should we automatically believe and accept that Bailey’s unseen inspirer was “The Tibetan, Djwhal Khul,” just because Bailey and her followers say so?
Is it not the way of the true philosopher to examine and investigate everything very carefully and studiously and form conclusions “by their fruits” rather than “by their claims”? The Tibetan Master or Christian Priest? article demonstrates that there is nothing – other than Bailey’s own unsubstantiated claims – to suggest that the individual telepathically dictating her books (and we do indeed believe that she did have an unseen inspirer) was Tibetan, Indian, or Eastern in any way but everything to suggest that he was a Westerner and someone wishing to replace the pure nontheistic Eastern Esotericism of genuine Theosophy with an unusual quasi-monotheistic form of Christian “Esotericism” replete with the very concepts of a personal God and a personal Christ (along with emphasis on the supremacy and superiority of “the Lord Christ”) which H. P. Blavatsky and the real Masters of the real Trans-Himalayan Brotherhood had sought so hard to attempt to eradicate and overthrow.
And when one finds such statements as these in the Bailey books, purportedly telepathically dictated to her by the actual Trans-Himalayan Esoteric Buddhist Initiate D.K., a known chela of the Mahatma K.H. –
* “Upon the spiritual side, as I told you in an earlier book, the whole field of religion will be re-inspired and re-orientated from Rome because the Master Jesus will again take hold of the Christian Church in an effort to re-spiritualise it and to re-organise it. From the chair of the Pope of Rome, the Master Jesus will attempt to swing that great branch of the religious beliefs of the world again into a position of spiritual power.” (“The Destiny of the Nations” p. 59)
* “The long divorce between religion and politics must be ended and this can now come about . . .” (“The Reappearance Of The Christ” p. 18-19)
* “The Master Jesus will take a physical vehicle, and with certain of His chelas effect a re-spiritualisation of the Catholic churches, breaking down the barrier separating the Episcopal and Greek churches from the Roman. This may be looked for, should plans progress as hoped, about the year 1980.” (“A Treatise on Cosmic Fire” p. 759)
* “. . . the Japanese, whose psychological make-up is totally different, as are their nervous systems, which are of fourth root race quality . . . This destruction and the consequent release of their imprisoned souls, is a necessary happening; it is the justification of the use of the atomic bomb upon the Japanese population.” (“The Externalisation of the Hierarchy” p. 495)
* “The atomic bomb emerged from a first ray Ashram [of the Masters of Wisdom], working in conjunction with a fifth ray group; from the long range point of view, its intent was and is purely beneficent.” (“The Externalisation of the Hierarchy” p. 548)
* “I would like at this time to touch upon the greatest spiritual event which has taken place since the fourth kingdom of nature, the human kingdom, appeared. I refer to the release of atomic energy, as related in the newspapers this week, August 6, 1945, in connection with the bombing of Japan.” (“The Externalisation of the Hierarchy” p. 491)
* “A right and constructive attitude must . . . be grounded in the knowledge that the war – with all its unspeakable horrors, its cruelties and its cataclysmic disasters – was but the broom of the Father of all, sweeping away all obstructions in the path of His returning Son. It would have been well-nigh impossible to prepare for the coming [i.e. the “Second Coming of Christ,” a concept introduced into “The Theosophical Society – Adyar” in 1909 by C. W. Leadbeater, many of whose self-proclaimed “clairvoyant discoveries” form the doctrinal basis of the Bailey teachings] in the face of the pre-war conditions.” (“The Reappearance Of The Christ” p. 165)
* “Of his sincerity and of his point of attainment there is no question.” (“Esoteric Psychology” Vol. 2, p. 302-303; referring to Leadbeater, who is proven to have been a fraud, chronic liar, and paedophile, see the vast array of evidence at The Case against C. W. Leadbeater)
* “The Jewish people have not only repudiated the Messiah (which their race produced), but they have forgotten their unique relation to humanity; they forget that millions in the world today have suffered as they have suffered and that – for instance – there are eighty per cent of other people in the concentration camps of Europe and only twenty per cent Jews. The Jew, however, fought only for himself, and largely ignored the sufferings of his fellowmen in the concentration camps.” (“The Rays and The Initiations” p. 635)
* “On the subject of intermarriage, the best and soundest thinkers in both the white and black races at this time deplore mixed marriages. They mean no happiness for either party. When considering this subject it should be remembered, however, that intermarriage between the white peoples and the yellow races (the Chinese and the Japanese) is equally unfortunate and – with the rarest exception – seldom proves successful and is never satisfactory where the children of such unions are concerned.” (“Problems of Humanity” p. 113-114)
* “. . . activities to which the Christ is at this time dedicated: . . . The gradual dissolution – again if in any way possible – of the orthodox Jewish faith, with its obsolete teaching, its separative emphasis, its hatred of the Gentiles and its failure to recognise the Christ.” (“The Externalisation of the Hierarchy” p. 544-545)
* “The Lord of Pain has descended from His throne and is treading the ways of earth today, bringing distress, agony and terror to those who cannot interpret His ends.” (“The Externalisation of the Hierarchy” p. 116)
– it becomes obvious that something is very VERY wrong and disturbing here.
The great tragedy is that, in our experience, no Bailey student is familiar enough with the finer details and implications – nor, very often, even the more up front and direct ones – of the original Theosophical literature to be able to see anything wrong, questionable, disturbing, untheosophical, or anti-theosophical in the slightest in the above quotes.
So, Bailey students/supporters, please don’t be so quick to attack those who point out uncomfortable facts or details that you are unwilling to properly examine. They are only doing that which H. P. Blavatsky encouraged the doing of in her article titled “On Pseudo-Theosophy.” And please realise that if you really want Theosophists and anyone else to believe that the Bailey books are not Christian propaganda, you’ll have a big job to do.
SOME INTERESTING FACTS
(from Tibetan Master or Christian Priest?)
Bailey’s “Tibetan” is so undeniably Christian that he speaks not of “THE New Testament” but of “OUR New Testament” (“D.K.” via Alice Bailey, “The Light Of The Soul” p. 426). . . . In the Bailey books, the religious scripture referred to, quoted from, and expounded upon most often, is the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Her unseen inspirer also evinces some small degree of familiarity with the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali but none at all with anything Tibetan or Buddhist. Judging from his quotes and references, he prefers even the Old Testament to any Buddhist scripture and doesn’t even make the slightest mention of the existence of such a thing as the Dhammapada, the most popular, well known, and basic Buddhist scripture.
And yet this Christ-praising, God-believing, Gospel-recommending, Church-supporting, Bible-quoting “Tibetan” is implicitly believed by Bailey followers to be some sort of wise old Lama or Abbot at a Buddhist monastery somewhere in Tibet and a high ranking member of the Trans-Himalayan Brotherhood! And why? Simply because Alice Bailey said so.
We cannot help but recall the words of one writer who, after studying and examining the Bailey teachings, found himself having to conclude that Alice Bailey was “a deluded Christian writing for deluded Christians.” That may not be quite fair for all her students but undoubtedly they must all be quasi-Christians when not complete Christians; otherwise how could they swallow, accept, and promote such overwhelmingly Christian stuff?
It is interesting to note that in the hundreds of letters by the Master Koot Hoomi and the Master Morya, published in “The Mahatma Letters,” of the 15 different scriptures referred to or quoted from, 14 are Buddhist and 1 is Hindu. The Masters demonstrate a clear knowledge of and close familiarity with such texts as the Jnana Prasthana Shastra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Mahavagga, the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, and the Khuddaka Patha, the latter of which the Master M. calls “my family Bible.” Scriptures from various different forms of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. The Hindu scripture referred to is Atma Bodha, one of the major works of Adi Shankaracharya. The Bible and New Testament are mentioned only by means of criticism and disapproval.
This “Tibetan” is so distinctly un-Buddhist that he speaks and writes of Buddhists and Buddhism as if they are something outside of his own views, work, affiliations, and philosophy:
“We have spoken here of God in terms of Person, and we have used therefore the pronouns, He and His. . . . The Buddhist teaching recognises no God or Person. Is it, therefore, wrong from our point of view and approach, or is it right? . . . the only way in which the human mind and brain can express its recognition of the conditioning divine life is to speak in terms of Person, of Individuality. Hence we speak of God as a Person, of His will, His nature and His form.” (“D.K.” via Alice Bailey, “Esoteric Psychology” Vol. 2, p. 229)
We do not mean to imply, however, that the Trans-Himalayan Brotherhood adheres to any publicly known form of Buddhism, whether Tibetan or otherwise; that the contrary is the case has been shown in the article The REAL Esoteric Buddhism. But it is undeniably an Esoteric Buddhist Brotherhood and School and not a Christian Brotherhood.
Yet many Bailey students eventually admit and acknowledge that in their view HPB was an incapable and unreliable transmitter of the Masters’ real Message and Teaching and that Bailey was far better suited for the task. (Incidentally, the only virulently and offensively anti-Blavatsky emails we have received from visitors to this website are not from evangelical Christians or atheists but are from Alice Bailey students! While they may speak reverently of her and use her name positively some of the time, it rarely takes long – especially in their interactions with genuine HPB students – before the mask comes off and they make their real feelings and opinions known.) If this is one’s idea – even after reading Words from The Masters about H. P. Blavatsky and Who are you, Madame Blavatsky? – then you really cannot seriously ever expect devoted HPB students (whether associates of the United Lodge of Theosophists or any other Theosophical group) to view you as allies and co-workers in a common cause.
We go by what the actual Masters are known to have actually said and taught, but of course you are entirely free to do whatever you may choose and see fit. We hope it will be realised that all of this is not written out of condemnation (as much as it may admittedly seem like it at first glance) but compassion. We do not seek to change people’s minds but simply to provide helpful information that can enable those so inclined to make a well informed change of direction if they so desire.
