The Tao that can be called Tao is not Tao.
Names cannot name the eternal Name.
The nameless: the origin of heaven and earth.
The named: the mother of ten thousand things.
If you are empty of desire, you can perceive the mystery.
If still filled with desire, just perceive the manifestations.
Tao is the limitless, bottomless emptiness which is the origin of all things.
It blunts sharp edges, unties knots, softens glare, and becomes one with the dusty world.
It moves all things back to where there is nothing.
Meeting it, you see no front. Following it, you see no back.
Live in the ancient Tao, master the existing present, understand the source of all things. This is called the record of Tao.
Attain complete emptiness and hold fast to stillness.
Going back to the root is stillness. This means returning to what is. Returning to what is means going back to the most natural and ordinary.
With understanding of the most natural and ordinary, mind opens.
Mind opening leads to compassion, compassion to nobility, nobility to heavenliness, and heavenliness to Tao.
– from Stanzas 1, 4, 14, and 16 of the Daodejing (Tao Te Ching) by Laozi (Lao Tzu)
